ππ¨π π‘π¨π©π©π’π§π has become more common in recent times. A 2016 survey conducted by Kelly, a prominent South African staffing and recruitment company, revealed that 44% of the respondents had switched jobs between two and three times since beginning their careers. Additionally, 29% had taken on four to six different jobs. In 2017, another survey by Brighter Monday and Trends & Insights For Africa found that 80% of employed job seekers planned to leave their current job within the next year, while a minority of just 5% intended to stay put.
These statistics indicate a growing trend of job hopping, which is something recruiters should be prepared to encounter. So my fellow HRsΒ let us be ready for this. Unfortunately, many recruiters tend to view job hoppers negatively, often perceiving them as unstable, disloyal, or potentially disruptive employees.
Job changes can occur for various reasons, including:
π― Organizations merging or closing down.
π― Limited career growth opportunities within your current workplace.
π― Engaging in contract employment.
π― Experiencing poor performance, retrenchment, or misconduct issues.
π― Relocating due to family circumstances, among other factors.
If you’ve been labeled a job hopper and want to present yourself more positively to potential employers, consider the following strategies on your CV:
π‘ Highlight your outstanding performance by listing your achievements rather than just responsibilities.
π‘Showcase any awards or recognition you’ve received in your previous roles.
π‘ Demonstrate your adaptability and willingness to thrive in dynamic environments.
π‘Opt for a functional CV format over a chronological one to emphasize your skills and qualifications.
π‘ When explaining your reasons for leaving past positions, focus on positive factors and omit negative ones. However, be honest if a recruiter asks you to clarify your departure circumstances.
